Crime Drops but Bike Thefts Rise
There was happily an overall 8% drop in crime recorded by the police in the last twelve months, according to Home Office data issued last week. The quarterly crime figures showed reductions over the same quarter from the previous year in many key areas including car crime, criminal damage, robberies and burglary. However, it also noted that there had sadly been an increase in personal theft and bicycle thefts, both of which had increased by around 7%. There has been much encouragement for people to use cycles rather than cars but the consequences of this can not be ignored. We have warned before about bike thefts and how huge numbers of bikes are inadequately protected, often being stored in wooden or cheap metal sheds – it has now become something of an epidemic and the public would be well advised to think about security measures, especially for the more expensive machines. There is good general advice about bicycle security on the Home Office web site at http://www.crimereduction.homeoffice.gov.uk/vehiclecrime/vehiclecrime063.htm.
The best advice by far is to get them securely locked away out of sight and some more specific advice about this can be found at http://www.garden-security.co.uk/bike-security-print.htm. The time to act is now.
