The combination of British Summer Time and the worsening economic gloom have given rise to a series of timely garden security warnings from several major insurance companies:- a. "Lock up your garden valuables" warns Mike Pickard of esure, following the results of a study by ICM Research that found 93% of householders regularly leave expensive items out in the garden overnight . b. EZ Insurance anticipates that the change from GMT to BST could see an increase of 25% in garden crime. c. According to Halifax Home Insurance garden theft rose 63% at this time last year. d. A recent survey by M&S Money reveals that :-

What’s Tommy T-Leaf been up to?
March 3rd - Two bronze statues, one a 1.2 metre antelope and the other an 80cm foal, were stolen from a Garden Centre near Warminster in Wiltshire. March 24th - thieves took credit cards, a cheque book, a mobile phone and cash from a house in Bakewell, entering through an unlocked door while the owner was in the garden March 20 - also in Bakewell a box of valuable jewellery was stolen from a house on Park Road at 2pm while the homeowner was in the garden.
March 23rd – Gt Saling (Essex) – an Iron Equinoctial ring stolen from a garden. The piece is approx. 5 ft tall. April 6th - South Yorkshire Police issues a leaflet helping gardeners protect against crime. April 9th - West Mercia Constabulary urges residents to help them tackle garden crime by reviewing and improving their security.
April 14th - A pensioner says she no longer feels safe in her own neighbourhood after a thief snatched an ornament from her front garden in Spalding, Lincs. April 16th - Fishing tackle worth £800 stolen from shed in Kidderminster April 17th - A little boy has been left heartbroken after thieves stole his goal — including posts, bar and net - from the family’s garden in Exeter |
